that Mr. Ison informed me that the "Oldhamia's' papers

showed her to be on a voyage to Hongkong whereas when cap-

-tured she was steaming Northward towards the Bashee Chan-

-nel.

I did not think it necessary to

telegraph further to you after seeing the Chief Officer as

he had no information as to the ultimate fate of the vessel

and you had already been informed of the safety of the crew

Nothing more has been heard of

the "Oldhamia" A report appeared in an English paper

published in Japan on the 3rd. instant to the effect that

she had been recaptured by a Japanese cruiser but as Baron

Komura's telegram of the 5th. made no reference to such

recapture the report must have been without foundation.

The "Dnieper" (formerly "St. Peters-

-burg") which, according to Mr. Ison, had on the 4th.

instant sufficient coal on board for nearly 20 days steam-

-ing at full speed is believed to have been sighted at

5 p.m. on the 7th., 220 miles North-West of Manila, by the

British Steamer "Tean" which arrived here from Manila on
